Swedish painter Emma Löwstädt (1855-1932) specialized in genre scenes and portraits. Coming to Grez with her sister Eva, Emma lives in the middle of the Nordic artistic colony which includes a large number of women.
They studied at the Académie Julian, which reserved a workshop for them. Emma later married the American painter Francis Brook Chadwick. Together, they make many trips to go either to Sweden, to England or to the USA to visit their families.
In the former Pension Laurent that she and her husband bought in 1893, Emma has an independent house in which she sets up her studio, a place more conducive to creation for this mother of three children. She makes frequent trips to Brittany and Normandy, where she appreciates the colors and the light.
