Nikolai Bodarevsky was born in Odessa in 1850. A Ukrainian artist who painted historical scenes, landscapes and genre paintings. He was also a popular portraitist. Bodarevsky studied at the Odessa School of Drawing and at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (1869-1873). He was awarded several silver medals and received a gold medal. In 1875 he was awarded rank ‘classed artist, first degree’. In 1884 Bodarevsky joined the Society of Itinerant Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki). In 1908 he became an academician. The artist died in Odessa in 1921.
