"I'll continue to explore the human figure, searching for the eternal... looking for that common gene of nostalgia which runs in the lifeblood of all humanity...." ~ Mathieu BASSEZ ~
'Vuoti ed afoni i tuoi passi
sui giorni
Amore svegliati
e resta con me...
Resta con me
ad addormentare il respiro
prendi il mio battito..
la bocca...
gli occhi
baciami il collo...
baciami tutta
sciogli i miei capelli
e nel divenire poesia...
fammi sentire che ci sei...
primula mia d'Amore...'

Mathieu Bassez, was born in Ghent, Belgium in 1969, and today lives and works in a historical wine village in South-France, Bizanet.
After obtaining a Masters Degree in Eastern Philology and a Postgraduate Degree in Applied Languages and Business Communication at the University of Ghent, he studied etching techniques at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts - where he was the only foreigner in his class.
Mathieu Bassez's real passion, he discovered, being the authentic oil technique of the Italian master painters. With his belief that the best artistic education comes from studying the masters - he studied the great art collections of Europe. His magnificent canvases combine classical figurative realism with a daring contemporary mix of Japanese Zen-purification and French cabaret-elements.
"I'll continue to explore the human figure, searching for the eternal... looking for that common gene of nostalgia which runs in the lifeblood of all humanity...."
Bassez began his career by developing his compositions through preliminary drawings and color studies. His mastery of the folds of fabrics and materials he paints, provide a sensuality and warmth that is instinctively assuring - yet at the same time thoroughly modern. His canvases exhibit the techniques of the old masters, coupled with a seemingly sentimental yearning for a ungraspable situation.
Following an exhibition in Osaka organized by the Belgian government, he has quickly built up a international career and has exhibited throughout Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Japan - his work has been acquired by collectors and galleries worldwide.
The paintings of Mathieu Bassez can be found in the permanent collection of Barcelona's MEAM Museum, located next to the Picasso Museum - and in the prestigious Cuadro Fine Art Gallery & Museum in Dubai. He is the only Belgian represented in Southern Spain's Sammer School of 'Spanish Realists.'
