Born in 1902 in Pskov, Russia, Lev Chistovsky (or Tchistovsky) was a Russian figurative painter who concentrated mainly on female images.

He attended the Fine Art School in St. Petersburg, where he was a pupil of Vassili Savinsky and Alfred Eberling. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and later in Florence.
He met Irene Klestova in Venice in the late 1920s, who was an art student from Saint Petersburg, and had already exhibited her paintings at the Salon des Independents in Paris. They got married and settled in Paris.
